Today, we celebrate the 63rd birthday of Tom English, a former Coventry City forward, and extend heartfelt birthday wishes to him! Though not a frequent visitor to Coventry, Tom has been a special guest at past Ricoh Arena games, and we hope to see him again soon at the CBS Arena.
Born on October 18, 1961, in Cirencester and raised in Colchester, Tom joined Coventry City FC alongside his brother Tony. It was Tom, however, who made his mark, earning England Youth recognition while with the Sky Blues and stepping up to the professional ranks in the summer of 1979 under then-manager Gordon Milne. He debuted in Division One in August of that year, taking part in a 3-2 defeat at Stoke City, playing alongside stars like Steve Hunt and Tommy Hutchison.
During his time at Coventry, Tom showcased his goal-scoring abilities, netting ten league goals in his first season and making a total of 76 appearances, scoring 22 times for the club. In 1982, he moved to Leicester City in a player exchange, and over the following years, played for clubs like Rochdale, Plymouth Argyle, and Colchester United. Tom also had stints in Australia and Hong Kong before finishing his playing career in Essex with non-league clubs.
Tom’s legacy continues with his son, Tom Jr., following in his footballing footsteps.
