Legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found deceased in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on February 26, 2025. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies responded to a welfare check request around 1:45 PM local time and discovered the couple, along with their dog, deceased.
Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected, but the exact cause of death is yet to be determined.
Hackman, 95, was an iconic figure in Hollywood, best known for his Academy Award-winning performances in The French Connection (1971) and Unforgiven (1992). His career spanned more than four decades, with memorable roles in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The Conversation (1974), Crimson Tide (1995), and as Lex Luthor in the Superman films. After starring in over 80 films, Hackman retired from acting in 2004 following his final film, Welcome to Mooseport.
His wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, was a classical pianist. The couple married in 1991 and had lived a private life in Santa Fe for decades.
The news of their passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from fans and the film industry, honoring Hackman’s unparalleled contributions to cinema and the couple’s lasting partnership.
