Authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico, are investigating the deaths of renowned actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, 63. The couple, along with one of their three dogs, were found deceased in their residence on February 26, 2025. A maintenance worker discovered the bodies after noticing the front door ajar and being unable to contact the couple. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office reported no signs of forced entry or struggle, and initial assessments found no evidence of a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning. However, the scene’s unusual nature prompted authorities to obtain a search warrant for further investigation.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated that both individuals appeared to have been deceased for an extended period, though the exact timeline remains undetermined. Hackman was found in an entryway near a cane, suggesting a possible fall, while Arakawa was located in an upstairs bathroom with an open prescription bottle and scattered pills nearby. One of their German Shepherds was also found deceased in a bathroom closet; two other dogs were found alive and had access to the outdoors via a pet door.
The couple had been residents of Santa Fe since the 1980s, drawn by the area’s unique charm. They lived in a gated community just outside the city. Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner, was celebrated for his roles in films such as “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven.” Arakawa, a classical pianist, married Hackman in 1991, and the two were known for their private lifestyle.
In a statement, Hackman’s daughters and granddaughter expressed their grief: “He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us, he was always just Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.”
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths is ongoing. Authorities are conducting autopsies and awaiting toxicology reports to determine the exact causes of death.
